AWFT24 : « Ne pas utiliser les données pour s’adapter au changement climatique est irresponsable »
🌎 At the 5th edition of A World For Travel forum, the National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) emphasized the critical role of space data in adapting to climate change. The Space for Climate Observatory (SCO), launched in 2019 by 23 space agencies including CNES, collects and analyzes data to aid the tourism sector in managing environmental impacts. CNES highlights that over half of essential climate variables can only be observed from satellites. The CNES's projections suggest that within 20 years, irreversible climate phenomena will occur, with a temperature rise beyond two degrees expected by 2050. Coastal regions like Brittany and Southern France face submersion in 15-20 years. Urban adaptations for heatwaves involve planning measures like tree planting and water features. Data also indicate that by 2050, most ski resorts in the Pyrenees and Alps will lose over half of their snow coverage. CNES collaborates with maritime companies to optimize routes, thus reducing fuel consumption and emissions, while also enhancing iceberg collision avoidance. CNES also contributes to disaster management with a predictive service for extreme events like hurricanes and tsunamis, aiding in timely evacuations in high-risk areas such as Florida and Bangladesh.
